Most companies don't use their websites to make public service announcements but we aren't most companies. This job was a devious mess, unnecessary and deliberate in the deception. The problem? Latex paint sprayed over oil based paint. What made it devious? It was sprayed very well. If the painter that did this(it was done to the previous homeowner so the culprit remains unknown) could spray as well as this was sprayed it leads us to believe they were experienced enough to know about how incompatible latex and unprimed or prepped oil based paints are.
So, why did they do that? Well, because sanding and priming the oil based paint to change it over to a modern water based or acrylic/alkyd hybrid like we use takes time and labor. They chose to disassemble the kitchen, skip all prep work and spray latex paint. Probably on day 2.
This wasn't the first time we had seen a peeling disaster from this exact thing but it was the first time we accepted the challenge after some media blasting research. We knew for certain all the latex had to be stripped. We knew we were not interested in chemically stripping a 51-piece kitchen. We weren't interested in chemically stripping a 3 piece kitchen.
So after many calls and much research we found NuTech Restoration in Jefferson, Ga. They suggested soda blasting and we took their professional advice and brought all the pieces up and dropped them off and got busy aggressively sanding the latex off the cabinet bodies in the meantime.
After picking the doors and drawers up they were far from done with their rehab. We had to sand all the rough grain the soda blasting had created, heavily spray primer twice to give us enough product to sand into a smooth finish and do a LOT of filler work to get them ready for their topcoats of Ben Moore Advance.
When it was all said and done the homeowners were beyond excited someone was willing to take on the mess they inherited from the previous homeowners bad decision AND had the experience to do so. As we've stated before, we are a dedicated cabinet refinishing company. Do NOT allow your house painter to paint your cabinets or throw them in as as "add on" for your interior and exterior. This is specialized work and as such you are highly advised to use a company who's only focus is fine finishing and who possesses the skills, knowledge and specialty equipment to deliver professional quality results that not only look great but will last for years.
